Medog County of Nyingchi City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is located in the depth of the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon in southeastern Tibet, with an average altitude of 1,200 ㎡, an average annual temperature of 16℃, as we as abundant sunshine and rain. As the last county access highway over the country, Medog is 117 km away from its nearest neighbor county -- Pome. Many natural accidents happen on the only road between the two counties, such as landslides, mudslides and avalanches. 3 years ago, 80% of the county's vegetable supply came from Sichuan and Yunnan Province, which were sold at high price.

"Before, we used to grow grain in only one season of a year. 3 years ago we began to grow vegetables in winter and the income had increased double. Last year, my family earned 20,000 yuan RMB through planting vegetables, which was the highest income among that of vegetable planters in the village," said 46-year-old Xiang Yong, a villager of Medog's Yadong Village.

Before 2016, Medog County' agricultural planting was self-sufficient, with no large-scale vegetable planting and no commercialized production. Local people planted nothing after harvesting rice and corn in every September, which caused land waste for nearly half a year.

In 2016, the 8th batch of aid-Tibet work team from Guangdong Province has stationed in Medog County, providing scientific guidance for local agricultural revitalization and poverty alleviation. "In winter, the county enjoys plenty of sunlight, less rain and fog, which is suitable for vegetable planting. After our investigation, we have decided to take local farmers' professional cooperative as the center and use limited local land resources to moderately develop slack season vegetable planting in paddy fields," says Xie Guogao, an aid-Tibet cadre from Guangdong Province and the executive deputy secretary of Medog County party committee.

Because of its obvious geographical advantages, Yadong Village has been used as a winter vegetable planting base in the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon and a rape planting demonstration site.

In the winter of 2016, 54 households in Yadong Village have participated in the slack season vegetable planting, with an average income increase of more than 4,000 yuan RMB. Among them, 14 poor households have gotten rid of poverty, and more than 50 villagers have mastered planting technology of 5 vegetable kinds.

Planting scale of winter vegetables and rape in Yadong Village has been expanding from 36,000 ㎡ in 2016 to 400,000 ㎡ in 2018, including 200,000 ㎡ of vegetables and rape respectively.

"There are 160 households in the whole village, among them, 79 households plant vegetables in the slack season, realizing an average income increase of more than 6,000 yuan RMB; the highest annual sales of a single household exceeds 20,000 yuan RMB. 81 households planted vegetables in their own courtyards, each of them realizes an income increase of nearly 4,000 yuan RMB," said Lai Mingjian, an aid-Tibet cadre and the deputy director of Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Medog County.

Yadong Village has set up a vegetable sales platform with the help of aid-Tibet work team and the village task force. Yu Xiaokun, an aid-Tibet cadre and the executive vice-mayor of Medog Town introduces that, on the one hand, villagers supply vegetables to county government and enterprises; on the other hand, village cooperative establishes vegetable growers' Wechat group and businesses' Wechat group to purchase vegetables, so as to realize the unified purchase, distribution and sales of vegetables. Nowadays, Medog County has gradually formed a large-scale vegetable planting industrial belt.

Over the past 3 years, winter vegetable industry of Yadong Village has been booming and increasing farmers' income. Many poor households have been gradually lifted out of poverty. "My family's income is higher and higher. Last year, it has reached 20,000 yuan RMB. Now we earn money by ourselves and our lives are getting better and better," said Zhongdong, a 48-year-old villager.
