The foundation stone laying ceremony of the Xizang Planetarium was held on the east side of the Museum of Natural Science of Xizang on June 12, 2022, marking the start of its construction.

The roof of the Xizang Planetarium will be equipped with a refraction optical astronomical telescope with the largest diameter (about 1.06 meters) in the world, which has the dual functions of scientific research and popularization of science. In scientific research, in addition to the observation and research of celestial bodies, it can also provide space early warning for the launch of satellites and spacecraft in China.

According to Wang Junjie, deputy director of the Science and Technology Department of Xizang Autonomous Region, research functions of the telescope include variable star monitoring, binary star differential photometry as well as space target observation, in view of the small amount of light pollution and other factors.

The Xizang Planetarium, with a total construction area of 11,571.9 m², is scheduled to be completed in June 2024 and is expected to become another landmark building in Xizang.

Astronomical science knowledge popularization activities will be carried out in the completed Xizang Planetarium through exhibitions, trainings, experiments, films and television broadcasts, lectures and other forms, which will play an important role in promoting the scientific spirit and improving the scientific and cultural quality of the public. The annual reception capacity of the Xizang Planetarium is expected to exceed 100,000 person-times, and more than 100,000 people can receive popular science education in astronomy every year.
