Tibet to improve comprehensive traffic system over next five years

It is reported on Nov. 15 that Wu Yingjie, Party chief of China's Tibet Autonomous Region, said on the 9th Tibet Autonomous Regional Congress of the CPC that Tibet will improve the comprehensive traffic system including highway, railway and air routes over the next five years. Segments of Sichuan-Tibet Railway in Tibet will be finished. In the meantime, the construction of railway going to the port will be accelerated. The preparing work of Yunnan-Tibet Railway and Ngari Purang Airport will be carried out.

At the moment, Tibet's infrastructures still lag behind, an important bottleneck hindering economic and social development, which is particularly in farming and pastoral area. In the next five years, Tibet's highway, railway and air routes are gradually improved, lying a solid foundation for integrating into "One Belt, One Road" .

Wu Yingjie addressed that over the past five years, Tibet's transportation got rapid development. The total length of road grew by 33.7 percent compared with that of 2010. All places in Tibet had access to the road. 300 kilometers of Lhasa-Nyingchi high grade highway had been finished. Qinghai-Tibet Railway was extended to Shigatse. Sichuan-Tibet Railway started construction in advance. Lhasa-Nyingchi Railway progressed smoothly.

The 1,838-km Sichuan-Tibet Railway, another "heavenly road" after Qinghai-Tibet Railway, starts from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, and arrives at Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The length of bridges and tunnels in Sichuan-Tibet Railway accounts for 81 percent of the total. Chengdu-Ya'an segment has started construction in 2014. The construction of Lhasa-Nyingchi segment has begun in June of 2015.

Wu Yingjie said that the construction of railways in Tibet will speed up over the next five years. Lhasa-Nyingchi segment will be completed. Nyignchi-Kangding segment will start construction. The construction of railway going to the port will be accelerated. The preparing work of Yunnan-Tibet Railway and Yushu-Chamdo segment will be carried out.

The highway from Gonggar Airport to Tsethang of Shannan has started construction. It is an important road connecting Lhasa with Shannan, promoting regional economic coordinated development. With the length of 89.869 kilometers, this highway is expected to be finished in March of 2018.

Wu Yingjie contended that Tibet will push forward the construction of high grade highways such as Lhasa-Nyingchi, Shigatse-Shigatse aiport, Lhasa-Nagqu, Tsethang-Gonggar and Chamdo-Pangda. Lhasa-centered traffic circle will be set up, radiating Shigatse, Shannan, Nyingchi and Nagqu. Over the next five years, all counties in Tibet will have access to asphalt roads.

Wu Yingjie said that Tibet will accelerate the expansion of airports and improve the service function of Ngari and Shigatse airports.
