In recent years, Chamdo, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region has vigorously implemented major ecological system protection and restoration projects, constantly improved the quality and stability of the ecosystem, to effectively protect the grass, trees, mountains and rivers of the eastern Tibetan plateau, and promote the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
Water ecological protection has been steadily promoted in Chamdo. The city has improved the facilities in water conservation function areas of Lantsang River, Nujiang River and Jinsha River, sped up the treatment of sewage and garbage, built water source protection projects among 11 counties (districts) and 472 villages with investing more than 6 million yuan (about 8 billion US dollars), which has helped providing healthy drinking water to local villagers. Since 2013, water quality in the whole city has stayed at a good condition.
Natural forests protection has been vigorously implemented in the city. Local relevant departments have forbidden deforestation on natural forests in an all-round way, formulated a management system for foresters. More than 130,000 foresters have been managed by different levels and classifications, thus achieving a "double growth" on forest coverage rate and forest stock volume. Since 2013, the city has completed 1.764 million mu (113,760 km²) of afforestation, vigorously carried out the forest planting work, converted 368 "no-tree villages" and 36.1 million "no-tree households", and planted more than 1.3 million seedlings at places with altitude below 4300 meters.
Construction of nature reserve has been effectually advanced, too. Riwoche, Mangkam and Baxoi nature reserves have been established, covering a total area of 312,600 hectares (312,600 ㎡), with an increase of more than 400 species of wildlife, including 900 Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys and 8,000 wild red deer.
