Since the Oct. 13 of 2015, the gateway from Gyirong Port to Nepal reopens. Currently, it is only in trial operation. The local of Gyirong County with the Board Resident Certificate, tourists with exit - entry document and Nepal visa can go to Nepal from Gyirong Port.
On April 25, 2015, Nepal was struck by the 8.1-magnitude earthquake. Gyirong County, Shigatse Prefecture of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, was also affected by this strong earthquake. Afterwards, Gyirong Port was closed. On Oct. 13th, this port reopened, which was a good news for tourists who want to travel to Nepal from Tibet.
According to the staff of Gyirong Border Check Point, the road from Gyirong Port to Nepal is now in terrible condition, along which sometimes appears rockfall. Currently, residents living near the border and tourists have to go to Nepal from Gyirong Port by foot.
Gyirong, located in Shigatse Prefecture of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, is only 35 kilometers from Resuowa in Nepal. In the past, Gyirong Port was once the largest land trade port linking Tibet and Nepal.
