The ancient Tibetan calligraphy art in Xizang finds successors

The Nyi-zhu script, with its sharp angles and complete system, ranks first among the eight major standard Tibetan calligraphy styles. Sonam Tobgye, from Pusum Village, Pusum Township, Nyemo County, Xizang,began studying at the age of ten under the guidance of Tashi Phurbu, a municipal-level intangible cultural heritage inheritor of the Nyi-zhu script in Lhasa. Sonam Tobgye has participated in the restoration of the "Kangyur" scriptures, the hand-copying and restoration of the "Mila Grudum" in gold ink, and the gold ink transcription of the "Four Medical Tantras" at the Tibetan Hospital in Xigaze City. Since July 2020, Sonam Tobgye has served as an external instructor of Nyi-zhu script calligraphy at Nyemo Middle School, where he has cultivated over 200 teachers and students to date.
