Located at the south foot of Himalayas and the border of China and Nepal, Zham port is renowned as “the first gateway to Himalayas”. According to the Management Committee of Zham port, Zham port received over 1.4 million tourists in 2014.
Zham is a small border town which lies in the Nyalam County of Shigatse Prefecture and adjoins Nepal. Most tourists and people living on the frontiers regard Zham port as an important gateway to enter into Nepal.
According to Wang Ping, director of the Management Committee of Zham port, as the mature international land border port, Zham port takes up 90% of China-Nepal trade. China’s electronicproducts, daily necessities, Nepal’s rice and wooden products are main items of border trade. In 2014, the import and export value of Zham port reached 12.667 billion yuan RMB.
Tengye, a merchant in Zham port, will purchase handcrafts such as wooden bowl and decorations from Nepal and then sell them in his own hotels. He says “Many tourists and merchants go to Nepal through Zham port and there is almost no off-season. Nepal goods sell very well in the market.”
