Iodine salt coverage reaches 97% in China’s Tibet

The promotion on use of iodized salt in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has gotten remarkable achievement. Official statistic shows that iodine salt coverage in the whole region has reached 97.07% till the end of last year, which is a huge step ahead comparing with 19% coverage in the year 1997. Iodine salt delivery to villages and townships has achieved full coverage; all Tibetan children's iodine nutrition has reached the appropriate level as well.

Being used to eating local produced non-iodized salt, farming and stockbreeding areas in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region have always been among the high risk areas of iodine deficiency disorders. Over the years local departments of health have been promoting comprehensive preventive health measures to sound the system of control and monitoring and discovered local iodine deficiency disorders being basically eliminated.

According to official departments, government of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region has been increasing subsidies on Iodine salt for farmers and herdsmen since the year 2009. 30 million yuan RMB from the public finance has been located to the subsidies every year and price of famers and herdsmen purchasing Iodine salt has been reduced from 1.5 yuan RMB to 0.5 yuan RMB.
