With an investment of 374 million yuan RMB, Tibet has curbed desertified area of 1.88 million mu since 2009, which achieves outstanding effects.

Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is one of the most seriously desertified areas in the world. Due to many factors such as high altitude, cold weather and sparse vegetation, Tibet’s ecological environment is very fragile. At present, the area of desertified land in Tibet is 43.2698 million hectares and the area of sandy land is 21.6186 hectares. The situation of desertified and sandy land is very grim.

According to Lei Guilong, director of the Forestry Department of Tibet Autonomous Region, by taking policy measures, biological measures and project measures, as well as constructing sand-preventing shields, the desertification work has achieved significant results.

Statistics show that Tibet’s desertified land has declined 78900 hectares and sandy land has declined 65700 hectares. The sandstorm weather which affects the rising and landing of airplanes in Gongga airport has declined from 60 days to 20 days every year.
