According to the Ngari Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Bureau, the returning grazing land to grassland project has been implemented since 2004. Up to now, with an investment of 492.6 million yuan RMB, the project has covered 7 counties’ 143 villages in this prefecture, which benefits 17000 households and 72000 people.

It is said that the grazing-prohibition area is 7.61 million mu, rest-grazing area is 13.14 million mu, grassland reseeding area is 5.42 million mu and artificial grassland is 4000 mu. With an investment of 4.9 million yuan RMB, the first year’s project is carried out in Gerze County, then it is widely carried out in Gerze County, Gegye County and Rutog County with an investment of 47.12 million yuan RMB. The coverage rate and investment of this project increase year after year.

The implement of this project greatly protects and repairs Ngari’s grassland. The vegetation coverage rate of prohibiting-grazing pastures increases 5% to 10% and the rate of rest-grazing pastures increases 10% to 30%. Degraded grasslands are effectively governed and grasslands’ ecological functions are recovered. At the same time, the traditional production mode is changed. Herdsmen begin to use and protect grassland with scientific methods, which plays a solid foundation for the benign development of animal husbandry.
