Lhasa sees 1.7mln tourists during Shoton Festival

Lhasa, the capital city of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, received a record number of 1.7 million tourists during this year’s Shoton Festival that ended on the 20th of August. This event was originally a religious occasion, when local people would offer yogurt to monks who had finished meditation retreats. It has been held since the 17th century.

The week-long event, deemed the second most important Tibetan holiday, had various colorful activities such as the sunning of the Buddha, Tibetan opera performance, Thangka expo and others, which attracted 1.7 million tourists from home and abroad, up 21.06 percent year-on-year. In addition, the visitors brought 504 million Yuan( about 84 million U.S. dollars) in tourism revenue, a 33.34 percent increase compared with the previous year.

Besides, there was no serious traffic accident during the Shoton Festival. With the stable tourist market and the increasingly visitors, more and more colorful tourist products were exhibited.

Moreover, thanks to Lhasa traffic police detachment of public security’s scientific deployment and the hard work without rests, the road in the city was ensured to be safe and kept open, avoiding long-time and large traffic tram.

During the Shoton Festival, with 2700 policemen and 300 police vehicles, roads in the city were checked 40 times in order to make sure the safety, orderly and smooth of the traffic.
