One reported dead, 50 injured in NE India earthquake

One person has been reported killed with 50 others injured in the 6.7-magnitude earthquake that hit northeast India early Monday.

While details of casualties and damages are yet to come, there are reports of serious damages to properties in the state of Manipur.

The tremors were felt across northeastern and eastern India at 04:37 a.m. local time (23:07 GMT Sunday), the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences said, adding the epicenter of the quake was Tamenglong of Manipur near the border with Myanmar.

A few people on social networks posted photos of cracks and damages appearing in some buildings in the quake-stricken area. An official who is currently in Siriguri in northern West Bengal said his hotel building was shaking when the quake took place.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is currently in the northeast state of Assam, demanding that all steps be taken to provide necessary relief to those affected.

A national rescue team has been instructed to move from Guwahati, the state capital of Assam, to the quake-hit area, said the prime minister's office in a statement.
