Tibet will invest 4,900 million yuan RMB in the project of conserving and repairing 156 sky burial sites throughout Tibet in the next five years, according to the Tibet Autonomous Region’s Department of Civil Affairs. The maintenance expense of each sky burial site varies from 3 million yuan to 5 million yuan RMB, which has become the largest conservation project of sky burial sites in Tibet up to now.

The implementation program shows that almost all the counties within Tibet’s four cities and two prefectures except Nyingchi City own sky burial sites. In 2016, 47 sky burial sites will be conserved and repaired with an aggregate investment of 165 million yuan RMB.

Dajung, a scholar from Tibet Autonomous Region’s Academy of Social Sciences, said that the implementation of sky burial site conservation project is a kind of protection and respect for the Tibetan traditional burial culture.

Except for sky burial, there are many other burial ways, such as pagoda burial, water burial, cremation, cliff burial, tree burial etc. A Tibetan old man said that he himself would absolutely chose sky burial.
