Oxygen-enriched places on Tibetan Plateau

When it comes to Tibet, the first impression of most people is that Tibet is high cold and lack of oxygen where it is amazing to see even a little green. However, it is a kind of prejudice for Tibet. On this highland, the high altitude and harsh climate are certainly difficult for ordinary people to adapt, but lush original forests do exist on the vast Tibetan Plateau.

The total stock volume of forest in Tibet is 2.086 billion cubic meters, accounting for 13.78% of China’s total forest stock volume and ranking the first in China, according to the latest data released by Tibet Autonomous Region’s Forest Inventory and Planning Research Institute.

According to the definition of FAO, land with tree crown cover (or equivalent stocking level) of more than 10 percent and area of more than 0.5 hectares (ha). The trees should be able to reach a minimum height of 5 meters (m) at maturity. Based on this, China’s forest coverage rate is about 20%. And that the largest intact forest in China is located in Metok County, Nyingchi and Cuona County and Lhunze County, Shannan Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region. According to the statistic data by experts, the area of this forest is about 11,459 square kilometers.
