Tibet to apply for 35 geographical indications protection products

Nagqu cordyceps sinensis, Nyingchi matsutake, Tibetan medicine and other native products in Tibet are famous brands recognized by consumers when they go shopping. According to Tibet Bureau of QualitySupervision, at present, the number of Tibet's geographical indications protection products have reached 28. During the 13th Five-Year Plan, Tibet will apply for 35 geographical indications protection products.

Geographical indications protection products are products that are produced in specific regions, and their quality, reputation and other characters depend on producing areas’ natural factors and human factors. They are named after geographical names with the approval and examination of relevant departments.

In 2003, Nagqu cordyceps sinensis, the first geographical indications protection product in Tibet, passed the implementation of protection. By now, there are 28 geographical indications protection products in Tibet., which plays an important role in promoting the development of characteristic industry, cultivating special brands, and speeding up the transformation of resources advantages into economic advantages.

With the fast development of economic society, the importance of the protection of geographical indications products becomes obvious.

To implement the central government's relative requirements and measures and strengthen the characteristic industries, a survey and evaluation will be carried out for geographical indication product resources in Tibet's 7 prefectures (cities) and 74 counties (districts).

Unique food, agricultural products, traditional Chinese medicinal materials, Tibetan medicine, handicrafts, and material data are collected and summarized according to product category, producing range, market effect, natural and human resources. In addition, they are registered step by step and a basic database is established. At the same time, based on resources census work and focusing on drinking water, characteristic livestock products and national handicraft products, Tibet plans to apply for 35 geographical indications protection products with aim of speeding up the transformation of resources advantages into economic advantages.
