Tibet promotes “toilet revolution”

According to the "two sessions" recently held in Lhasa, in 2017, Tibet will vigorously promote the "toilet revolution". With an investment of 1.2 billion yuan, 2000 toilets will be constructed and renovated in the whole autonomous region with the aim of improving urban and rural people's living conditions and tourism environment.

Sonam Nima, director of the Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau of Tibet Autonomous Region, says that, these 2000 toilets will be built at scenic spots, along main highways and in public places with intensive tourists and local people. The site selection, appearance design, technical standards and relevant work have already been launched since last year.

Combining with regional characteristics, various regions in Tibet have begun to explore on the construction of public toilets. Zhou Xueliang, director of the Travel and TourismAdministration of Chanang County, depicts the future ideal toilet as mobile, small, and foam washing. The feces can be made into fertilizer.

Tashi Tsomo, NPC deputy of Ngari Prefecture, says that, most dry latrines in Shiquanhe Town have been renovated to water flushing type toilets. After renovation, the masses can have a cleaner environment and their health habits are more better.

Toilet revolution is consist with Tibet's tourism goal, says Xiao Jie, professor of Yangzhou University. He has once been to Tibet as an aid-Tibet cadre. To build Tibet as an important world tourism destination, beautiful scenery is only one factor to attract tourists. Tibet’s public service level can also be improved by taking advantage of toilet revolution.
