Since the reform and opening-up, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Nyingchi City has actively changed its working ideas, adopted various measures to promote economic, political, cultural and social development, which has made historic achievements and changes, and shown the new look to people. In 1986, Nyingchi City resumed its prefecture-level city construction system.

The economic aggregate continues to rise. By 2017, the regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nyingchi City has increased from 66 million yuan in 1986 to 13.331 billion yuan, with a 200-fold increase and an average annual growth rate of 14.7%; the local financial revenue has increased from 3.63 million yuan in 1986 to 1.296 billion yuan, with a 356-fold increase and an average annual growth rate of 20.9%; the per capita disposable income of farmers and herdsmen has increased from 425 yuan in 1986 to 13,407 yuan, with a 31-fold increase and and an average annual growth rate of 11.8%.

Infrastructure has improved significantly. Fixed assets investment has increased from 18 million yuan in 1986 to 24.731 billion yuan in 2017. In particular, a large number of key projects funded by the nation, such as Nyingchi Mainling Airport, Lhasa-Nyingchi high-level highway, Metok highway, Laohuzui hydropower station, Xoka hydropower station as well as Duobu hydropower station have promoted the economic development of Nyingchi City and the building of a moderately prosperous society.

Significant changes have taken place in the urban and rural landscape, and the rural economy constantly rises. By 2017, the urbanization rate of Nyingchi City has reached 41.5%, and the total number of well-off villages has reached 130, accounting for 26.58% of the total number of administrative villages. At present, 75% of the 141 border well-off villages have been built, with the planned capital of 3.7 billion yuan, which will be completed in 2019. Besides, in 2017, Nyingchi City has introduced more than 100 projects with more than 4 billion yuan of funds, signed 58 cooperative projects with 15 central enterprises, completed 8 projects and implemented 10.47 billion yuan of funds. With the continuous development of non-public economy, there are over 17,000 market players, 3,075 enterprises as well as 8 financial institutions in Nyingchi City which has become a good place for innovation, entrepreneurship and investment in Tibet. At the same time, the characteristic industries that are dominant by eco-tourism have been upgraded continuously. In 2017, Nyingchi City has received 5.1866 million tourists from home and abroad, and realized a tourism revenue of 4.546 billion yuan.

People's livelihood is developed rapidly, and significant progress is made in poverty alleviation. Compulsory education is developed in a balanced way, and the public health service system is constantly improved. In addition, Nyingchi City implements the cultural projects to benefit the people, and raises the level of social security. Since 2016, Nyingchi City has insisted on poverty alleviation as the first people's livelihood project, and has implemented a total of 4.39 billion yuan of poverty alleviation funds. It has achieved 5,900 households with 17.5 million people precisely lifting themselves out of poverty, and 358 poverty-stricken villages are also lifted out of poverty. The poverty incidence has dropped from 16.42% in 2016 to 3.85%. Up to now, Bayi District has shaked-off-poverty, and Mainling County, Gongbo gyamda County as well as Pome County have reached the poverty alleviation standard. Zayul County, Metok County and Nang County will also be lifted out of poverty in 2019.
