The past 40 years of reform and opening-up has witnessed China’s booming economy and a dramatic increase in Chinese people’s income. Relying on the advantages of economic development, Chamdo City, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region has actively embarked on a path of reform and opening up with Chinese and Tibetan characteristics, which has greatly injected a strong impetus into the local economy.

According to statistics, in 2017, 18 billion yuan (about 2,59 billion US dollars) of Gross Domestic Product（GDP）, 28.21 billion yuan (about 406 million US dollars) of Total Investment in Fixed Assets as well as 1.42 billion yuan (about 204 million US dollars) of public budget revenues have been realized in Chamdo. The income of urban and rural residents has respectively reached 27,400 yuan (about 3,943 US dollars), 9,560 yuan (about 1,376 US dollars), too. At the same time, farmers and herdsmen have broken the inherent thinking to achieve innovation and entrepreneurship.

In addition, Chamdo Economic Development Zone (Chamdo New District), as a new economic star in eastern Tibet, has fully witnessed Chamdo's development of keeping pace with the times. Over the past five years, the cadres and workers of Chamdo New District have overcome difficulties, so that the Economic Development Zone has achieved great-leap-forward development from villages to an investment zone. In March 2018, it has been officially approved as a region-level Economic Development Zone.

Meanwhile, Benda Cooperative of Chamdo’s Riwoche County, as a poverty alleviation model, has integrated aquaculture, greenhouse and tourism industry and helped 58 members of 18 local families getting rid of poverty.

In 2017, 377 industrial poverty alleviation projects have been implemented in Chamdo, with a total investment of 4.177 billion (about 601 million US dollars) yuan, which has lifted 32,000 poor villagers out of poverty.
