In February 1944, Lieutenant Donald W. Kerr of the U.S. 14th Air Force was shot down over Hong Kong and rescued by 14-year-old Li Shi of the East River Column. Under their cover, Kerr evaded Japanese forces for over two weeks before returning safely to Guilin.
