The total grain output of Xizang, China, reached 1.15 million tons in 2025, an increase of 20,500 tons or 1.81% year-on-year, setting a new historical record, according to information from the regional Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Notably, the output of highland barley surpassed 900,000 tons for the first time, reaching 905,300 tons, which is 17,600 tons or 1.98% more than the previous year.
It is reported that in 2025, the total grain sown area in the region reached 3.024 million mu (about 2016km²), with the sown area of highland barley being 2.334 million mu (about 1556km²), representing increases of 33,100 mu (about 22.07km²) and 33,400 mu (about 22.27km²) respectively compared with the previous year.
The Agriculture and Rural Affairs Department of Xizang Autonomous Region took improving the per-unit yield of grain and oil crops over large areas as a key measure for ensuring stable and bumper harvests. It coordinated the integration of quality farmland, improved seeds, advanced machinery, and scientific farming methods, established an "administrative + expert" working mechanism, and built 1.2 million mu (about 800km²) of standardized highland barley production bases and 35 "demonstration fields led by top Party and government officials" to a high standard, integrating and promoting high-yield technical models. Over 5,000 agricultural science and technology personnel at the regional, municipal, county, and township levels were organized to carry out agricultural science and technology guarantee services, vigorously promoting practical agricultural technologies. As a result, the comprehensive mechanization rate for crop cultivation, sowing, and harvesting in the region reached 68.1%.
In terms of policy support, the Department continued to implement subsidies for farmers such as those for fertilizers, agricultural machinery, pesticides, and improved seeds. It raised the subsidy standard for "one spray with multiple benefits," expanded the pilot scope of the differential subsidy for highland barley field seeds, and introduced new reward and subsidy policies to encourage farmers to increase grain output per unit area. Through a combination of multiple subsidy policies, it mobilized farmers' enthusiasm for growing grain and improving per-unit yields. In 2025, the regional average grain yield per mu (1 mu is approximately equal to 666.67m²) reached 380.29 kilograms, an increase of 2.65 kilograms per mu compared to the previous year. Simultaneously, the region fully advanced a three-tier fertilizer funding guarantee mechanism at the autonomous regional, prefectural (city), and county (district, city) levels with a 7:2:1 investment ratio. It earnestly carried out the "Securing Grain from Pests" campaign to promote harvests and continued the work of improving farmland quality, focusing on the construction of high-standard farmland. Cumulatively, the region has built 4.5462 million mu (about 3030.8km²) of high-standard farmland and upgraded 832,200 mu (about 554.8km²).
