At 4,772 meters: The dedication at Lektse Port

Lektse Port, at 4,772 meters above sea level, endures extreme conditions—oxygen levels below half of those at sea level and temperatures dropping to -20℃ in winter. Despite relentless snow and fierce winds, the port remains operational. Here, officers from Xigaze Customs, under Lhasa Customs, work in severe weather to embody the pledge of "Customs for the People."

"Documents verified, clear for release." This marked the 18th clearance order issued by Zhang Yuhua that day. As Xizang's highest and newest land port, Lektse Port borders Mustang County, Nepal. It serves as a key link in the Himalayan Economic Cooperation Belt and a vital bridge for China–Nepal trade and cultural exchange. "Our job is to ensure the safe and efficient flow of goods," Zhang said, his voice firm against the wind.

High altitude, low pressure, and severe weather once limited efficiency at Lektse Port. In response, the Xigaze Customs introduced a tailored "land port declaration, local inspection, and direct access" model. By utilizing the Xigaze International Land Port, this "one port with multiple wings" pattern streamlines the process—one-time declaration, one-time inspection, and direct delivery, accelerating clearance.

At the port, advanced H986 inspection equipment act as "smart eyes", scanning trucks in seconds without unloading. The system automatically verifies cargo information, ensuring precision and efficiency even in the harsh, high-altitude environment. "Smart devices make our work faster and more accurate while securing the border and reducing effort for businesses and drivers," Zhang said. Electronic declarations and online reviews also enables drivers to complete the entire process—including declaration and inquiry—via a smartphone, greatly enhancing convenience.

Efficiency is further boosted by close cooperation among Xigaze Customs, joint inspection agencies, and local governments. This collaboration facilitates China–Nepal customs dialogues and provides guidance to foreign trade enterprises and drivers. Infrastructure improvements continue to support the principle of "effective control, smooth flow, and faster clearance."

Today, Lektse Port is not only a trade corridor but a driver of local development. Residents engage in border trade and run shops, sharing in the port's prosperity. The "salt sheep ancient trail" has transformed into a "golden link" for China-Nepal cooperation. Since opening two years ago, the Xigaze Customs has processed 11,767.87 tons of imports and exports through the port, valued at approximately 725 million yuan (≈105 million U.S. dollars).
