On the roof of the world, spring may be a little slow to arrive, but it always comes as promised, bathing the snow-covered plateau in its warm light. March 28 marks the Serfs' Emancipation Day in Xizang. Today, let us listen to the story of Phentog, an 80-year-old Tibetan man.

“I am 80 years old. Before the democratic reform, I was a serf at the Pungro Manor in Chongye County. After the democratic reform, I finally gained my personal freedom.”Recalling the seismic changes that have spanned over half a century, the elderly Phentogwas deeply moved. Once a serfhimself, he, together with millions of others, broke free from the shackles of the feudal serfdom system under the theocratic rule of old Xizang during the democratic reform in 1959. Together, they left behind an era without freedom or dignity, finally becoming masters of their own destinies.

Today, Phentog lives a peaceful and happy life. Surrounded by his children and grandchildren, he enjoysthe warmth of a close-knit family.

From a serf who once suffered hunger and had no control over his own life, to a man who now lacks for nothing and enjoys a peaceful life in his later years—Phentog's life stands as a vivid reflection of the profound transformation experienced by millions of serfs in Xizang. In 2009, Xizang established the "Serfs' Emancipation Day" to commemorate this historic liberation.

The land of the snow-covered plateau has taken on a new look, and those who were once serfs now enjoy the blessings of a new spring. Phentog remarked that the democratic reform brought him a new life, and that the happiness he enjoys today was not easily gained. He cherishes it with deep gratitude, and witnessesXizang steadily advancingtoward a more prosperous and brighter future in this new era.
