Known as the "Fairies of the Plateau" in Xizang, the black-necked crane population has grown from around 3,900 in the late 1980s to more than 10,000 today. The substantial increase is attributed to the continuous improvement of Xizang's ecological environment. At present, Xizang has established 47 nature reserves at all levels, covering a total area of 412,200 square kilometers. Ecologically functional land types such as woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and water areas have increased to 1,081,100 square kilometers.
