Purang, Xizang: From a "Tent Marketplace" to an "International Port"

Source:xzxw.com 2026-04-28

In 1956, the "salt-grain trade" tent market in Purang County, Xizang, was a bustling hub. In 2018, the county invested 280 million yuan to build the Tangkar Border Trade Market right across from the old tent market. Today, more than 300 merchants have set up operations there, transforming the once-humble marketplace into a modern international port. In 2025, the total import and export volume of Purang Port reached 35.51 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 65%. The port also processed over 27,000 passenger crossings, up by 86% from the previous year. Standing tall beneath the Himalayas, this "Snowy Gateway" is writing a new chapter of border prosperity with an increasingly open stance.
