August 12, 2026 marks the 30th day of the sixth month on the Tibetan calendar, which is time for the annual Shoton Festival! "Shoton" means "yogurt banquet" in Tibetan language, which is why the festival is also known as the "Yogurt Festival." With a history of over 300 years, it was designated as a national-level intangible cultural heritage in 2006. This year, a giant thangka of Shakya Muni Buddha is displayed on Genpei Wuzi Mountain at Drepung Monastery. Come along for an immersive experience of this grand thangka unfolding ceremony!
