Recently, according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Xizang Autonomous Region, as of the end of September this year, the region had 20.625 millionhead of livestock on hand, up 3.5% year on year; 1.846 million head of livestock slaughtered, up 8.6% year on year; and meat, egg, and milk output reaching 577,000 tons, up 6.9% year on year.

This year, Xizang continued to promote the coordinated development of grassland and animal husbandry industries, implementing multiple subsidies to help improve the quality and efficiency of animal husbandry. Xizang invested 39.28 million yuan(RMB) to complete over 390,000 mu of forage planting around homes and farmyards. Meanwhile, 149.14 million yuan was allocated in subsidies for improved livestock breeds, with cattle improvement carried out in an orderly manner and quality breeding bulls and rams introduced and promoted.

Xizang currently has 28 livestock and poultry genetic resource breeds, which have been included in the national catalogue of livestock and poultry genetic resources. Breeding of new varieties such as wild blood yak and highland quality dairy cows is also underway. In addition, local authorities have allocated 130 million yuan(RMB) in subsidies for livestock sales and 100 million yuan in subsidies for breeding cows and ewes, guiding herders to cull old, weak, sick, and disabled livestock, optimize herd structure, expand the scale of breeding-age females, and drive highland animal husbandry onto a higher-quality development path.
