After the earthquake struck Baqen County, Nagqu City, Xizang Autonomous Region, numerous unfamiliar faces arrived here. Some lit up stoves, some set up communication lines, and others carried stoves into the tents of affected residents. Large trucks shuttled back and forth, delivering supplies as well as the care of people across the country.
Buzha is an employee of the Nagqu Central Sub-branch of China Life Property & Casualty Insurance. When the earthquake struck, he was on leave and, because of an eye injury, had planned to be hospitalized for treatment.
But after learning that an earthquake had occurred in Baqen County, Buzha came without hesitation. "I know the pastoral areas well and have dealt with local people all year round. Coming here, I can at least help a little," he said. After arriving in the disaster area, he and other volunteers went from village to village and household to household, noting down what people lacked and needed and trying their best to help. In Village 13 of Maru Township, they met Gajiu's family. Because the family lived relatively far away and supplies were inconvenient to transport, Buzha and his colleagues delivered food and daily necessities to them. "Thank you so much!" Gajiu held his hand and thanked him repeatedly.
In recent days, at the construction site of the resettlement site in Village 2 of Maru Township, Kang Houchao, the emergency rescue person in charge from the Fifth Company of China Railway No. 2 Engineering Group, has been leading workers in building prefabricated houses for the residents. Every night the temperature drops sharply, yet the site remains brightly lit. "We all volunteered to come," Kang said, without stopping the work in his hands. They know that for the affected residents, moving into warmer housing is an urgent matter.
On the supply transport route, driver Zhanduo made trip after trip, delivering the two most urgently needed things — water and liquefied gas. "The weather is too cold, and people need hot water and hot meals, so liquefied gas must keep up, and water must keep up too," he said. Making two round trips a day, he had no time to rest at all. "So many people have come, and I want to do my part too," Zhanduo said.
Those who give love receive love. The people in the disaster area saw it and remembered it in their hearts. At the resettlement site in Village 2 of Maru Township, Gyatso Lhamo, a second-year junior high school student, voluntarily joined the kitchen help team and, together with her friends, washed vegetables, washed dishes, and collected garbage. "We also want to do something to thank those who have helped us," they said. Though young, they are doing what they can to express their gratitude.
Tents have become prefabricated houses, and unfamiliar faces have become familiar friends. No one was required to come — Buzha came with an injury, Kang Houchao worked through the night without rest, and Zhanduo skipped meals —"We all came voluntarily," "We are one family"... Their words are the simplest and yet the most resolute.
The cold wind still blows, but here there are hearts united as one, warmer than the sunshine.
