Karru Village of Nyemo develops cultural tourism industry

Karru Village is located in Nyemo County of Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Being next to the national highway No. 318, the village boasts beautiful idyllic scenery and unique cultural landscapes. One thing worth mentioning is an old walnut grove in which the highest walnut tree is over 1,300 years old, and tourists always linger among walnut trees forgetting to return.

Taking advantage of the old walnut grove, Tibetan family inns and intangible cultural heritage works, a folk culture experience park has been built in the village, which encourages local poor households to engage in tourism industry, and has helped 13 households getting jobs and increasing income.

At Karru's folk culture exhibition center, there are Tibetan incenses, Tibetan paper and Pusum sculptures on display. Besides, inheritors of intangible cultural heritages show traditional Tibetan paper-making and Tibetan incense-making techniques at the center. Tourists could also experience making Tibetan paper and incense, which is a good chance to know more about traditional Tibetan culture.

82-year-old Dechen Paldron works for Granny Barely Wine Distillery as a winemaker. She says, "Our highland barley wine is brewed with pollution-free and natural spring water, and needs to be stored for a long time. In the past, highland barley wine was mainly offered to family members and friends. Now, the wine distillery becomes a tourist attraction where tourists can watch the brewing process, taste the wine and purchase it."

With the help of the Communist Party of China (CPC) local branch in Karru Village, 82-year-old Tsering Yangkyi's house gets renovated and is turned into "Kangbumeiduo Leisure Manor", which now is a good place for traditional wedding or holiday entertainment. Relying on running the manor, her income increases a lot. In addition, she also shares her successful experience with local villagers.

"In October 2018, Karru Village has won the title of "China's Beautiful Leisure Village", which is an incentive for improving local villagers' income with the development of cultural tourism industry basing on the local conditions. Karru Village will continue to deepen the tourism mode of "company + farmer" to help more villagers obtaining jobs in the scenic spot." says Tashi, the Party secretary of CPC local branch in Karru Village.
