To protect China's traditional villages, the Department ofHousing Construction plans to list 1602 villages in the 4th batch of traditional villages list, among which 8 villages in Tibet are included in the list. These villages are Gangga Village in Tobgyai Town, Namling County, Shigatse City, Gangga Village in Gangga Town, Dingri County, Shigatse City, Jampel Village in Tongmoin Town, Xaitongmoin County, Shigatse City, Pagri Town neighborhood committee in Yadong County, Shigatse City, Zhaxigang Village in Lulang Town, Bayi District, Nyingchi City, Rika Village in Paggai Town, Bome County, Nyingchi City, Tashi Qedeng Village in Nedong District, Lhoka City, and Tanggoqe Village in Xasoi Town, Qonggyai County, Lhoka City. Since the first batch of China's traditional villages list was publicized in 2012, 11 villages in Tibet have entered the list.
It is said that the primitive name of China's traditional villages is ancient villages, meaning for villages with rich cultural and natural resources as well as historical, cultural, scientific, art, economic and social values. The judging standard is as followings. Villages keep historical evolution, namely building environment, architecture style and village location without big changes. Villages with unique folk customs. Villages still serve for people though with a long history. In September 2012, the name of "ancient villages" was changed as "traditional villages" by the expert committee on traditional villages protection and development.
