The first national-level repairing base for Tibetan ancient books in China has been carried out smoothly and is planed to be put into use by the end of this year, according to Tibet Library. This base will be good to protect, inherit and develop Tibet's precious literatures.
Tibet's ancient books are mainly distributed in monasteries and partly scattered in libraries, research institutions, archives bureaus, museums and the masses' homes. Some of them are damaged because of improper protection.
By taking advantage of various professional equipments and adopting experts' advices, Tibetan ancient books are repaired and restored by the repairing base.
The national ancient books protection center presented repairing tools such as electronic light-transmitting plate, flop machine and flattening machine to this base and organized trainings for professionals. Tibetan ancient books are recorded according to time, title, author, size and other aspects. As for books that are seriously damaged and with high academic values, they will be taken photos and backup alone.
Ancient books protection can be divided into primordial protection and regeneration protection. The former includes repairing, improving preservation conditions and producing fittings, etc. The latter includes recreating, publishing and digitization, etc.
