By Liu Fang, Zhu Shan Source:China Tibet News 2019年04月04日 15:44

Samdrup Drolma, born in 1937, lives in DagarTown of Lhasa's Chushur County, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Before the democratic reform in 1959, Drolma was a serf of Lhayul Manor in Chushur.

"Before the democratic reform, our whole family worked as serfs in Lhayul Manor, and we didn't have enough to eat and wear. Some serfs were starved or frozen to death in winter. I lost my parents when I was 10; when I was only thirteen, I became a Tralpa (a kind of Tibetan serf) and worked day and night." 82-year-old Samdrup Drolma said.

In 1955, Samdrup Drolma couldn't bear the heavy load and fled from the manor with her sister and aunt. "If we were caught, we would be beaten savagely, therefore, we ran as far as possible. We begged all the way and finally arrived at Yadong of Xigaze, where we encountered many run-away serfs like us, then scratched a living together.”

Thanks to the region's democratic reform movement in 1959, like other serfs, Samdrup Drolma was freed and went back to Chushur, where she was born. She and her two sisters were given land to grow grains and build house. The next spring, they grew highland barely and all harvest from the land belonged to themselves.

"Before 1959, we worked for feudal lords and couldn't get any grain. If anyone dared to offend the owners, he/she would be cruelly slashed." Samdrup Drolma said.

In 1963, Samdrup Drolma joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) with other nine villagers. Since then, she actively broadcasted the Party's theories, guiding principles and policies to the public and devoted to agricultural production.

In 2016, under the policy of relocation program, Samdrup Drolma's family moved to Dagar Town. The relocation program aims to relocate impoverished people from inhospitable areas.

Today, Samdrup Drolma lives in a decent two-story Tibetan-style house. “What a beautiful life! With the help from the Party and the government, we moved into the new house. My daughter worked as a cleaner and payed by the county government; and my granddaughter became a kindergarten teacher after graduation last year. ” she said.

"In old times, it took almost three days from my hometown to Lhasa, while now through the newly built road, we spend only one hour. In addition, we have securities on medical services, education and housing. The signed family doctor comes and checks my health condition at intervals; I get 500 yuan RMB monthly as aged party member allowance. Good policies and a happy life are my secrets of living long. ” Drolma said happily.
